“I know that there is a real problem with violence now…but how do I get involved? What can I do??”

So you’re ready to make a difference? Let’s get started…Check out these suggestions

• Use McGruff Crime dog in an event.

• Participate in March of Dimes.
• Paint parks.
• Present a workshop on social/sexual harassment in the workforce, bullying, cliques or intimidation.
• Sponsor fight free days at school.
• Read to the elderly.
• Present violence prevention workshops.
• Help in school and community beautification.
• Participate in child abuse awareness.
• Sponsor a violence free dance.
• Adopt a family.
• Serve in a local domestic violence shelter.
• Celebrate National Youth Violence Prevention Week.
• Promote respect and tolerance.
• Learn to manage anger.
• Learn to resolve conflict peacefully.
• Support safety.
• Volunteer in your local teen court.
• Become a Big Brother or Big Sister.
• Learn how to be a youth judge, prosecutor, defender or jury member.
• Participate in Youth Service America – National Youth Service Day.
• Volunteer in a Boys and Girls Club of America.
• Make a commitment not to be violent.
• Become a peer counselor/ conflict mediator.
• Join a positive activity.
• Be an example/role model.
• Take responsibility for own behavior.
• Work towards reducing amount of violence in media.
• Encourage neighborhood watch programs.
• Teach students conflict resolution skills.
• Help make guns less readily available to youth.

Please feel free to modify these ideas to fit your chapter, school and community. These suggestions are merely the starting point. Think about the specific problems you encounter in your area. Use these ideas to develop a project designed to reaching your area.  Then remember to tell us about it!!
