“School violence
doesn’t really happen that much. Really, it’s all on TV and in the big
cities…it doesn’t affect me. So why bother trying to prevent it?”
Have you
heard this before? Thought it? Sure! Most of us have wondered if it really was
all that bad. Take a look at this…
- Teenagers
are the group most often victimized by crime in the
US
. Although teens aged 14-19 comprise 14% of the
population aged 12 and older, they are the victims in 3
out of 10 violent crimes and 1 out of 4
thefts
If that
doesn’t surprise you check out these local statistics.
Illinois
Statistics
- In
2002 incidents of gun murders, gun suicides, and unintentional shootings
killed 146 children and teens under 19 years
of age.
- In
2001, 21% of
Chicago
students and 11% of other
Illinois
students carried a weapon to school.
- 48% of gun owning households with children do NOT regularly make sure
that guns are equipped with child safety locks or other trigger locks.
- 22% of all teenaged students have been in a fight the past year.
- 34% were boys
- 11% were girls

of the males have been in 10 or more
fights

in 6 or 17% students have been robbed at gun
or knife point.

- 15% of gun violence at school erupts over long-standing arguments.
- 12% caused by romantic disagreements.
- 10% caused by disputes over possessions.
- A
typical child will watch 8,000 murders and 100,000
acts of violence on television before completing elementary school.
- 8% of males have carried a gun to school one or more times
during the year.
- There
is more violence on MTV than on 3 major
networks combined.
- Music
video violence features average of 20 violent
acts per hour.
- Every
day 1 child is killed by gun violence.
